The Famous Rendlesham UFO in Britain

In late December of 1980, eyewitnesses saw many strange lights and what seemed to be exotic aircraft in and around the Rendlesham Forest in Suffolk, England. Over the course of three nights, the US Air Force members stationed on the nearby RAF Woodbridge base saw strange lights, witnessed indentations from what might have been a landing, and in one case apparently even saw the craft up close. While many elements of the events seem to be misremembered or fake, there is still something odd to the overall picture.

On the first night of the incident, the soldiers reported seeing a bright object seemingly coming down to land in the forest. An investigation was made, but nothing major was found. (One of the investigators reported later having seen the craft up close and examined it in detail, but no other records of the event back up his claims.) A few lights were seen in the woods but proved impossible to follow. However, the next morning 3 indentations were found in a rough triangle in a clearing in the woods, and the trees nearby appeared oddly damaged.

The next night the light seemingly returned and a few of the men, including Lt. Colonel Halt, set out to investigate. They studied the landing site for a while, noticing background radiation that seemed slightly higher than usual, and then the light seemed to return, flashing on and off in the distance. The men followed it through the woods and nearby fields for a while, noting on tape that the animals of the forest were audibly distressed. While they eventually got a clear view of the blinking light, they were unable to discern its nature, and it seemed to perform odd tricks like splitting and shooting out sparks.

Three starlike objects were also noticed, seemingly moving across the sky in various ways. One even seemed to on occasion shoot down bright beams of light toward the ground, and in later interviews Halt claimed that the light had actually struck near his feet at one point. After observing the objects for a while without major change, the men returned to base.

While non-paranormal explanations have been provided for several pieces of the mystery - the flashing light may have been a lighthouse nearby, the starlike objects may have been twinkling and flashing stars, and the first 'landing' may have been a meteor and some rabbit diggings - the overall picture that emerges is still a strange one. The amount of coincidences and oddities building up to create the picture that resulted seems unusually high. However, time and memory have erased many of the details of the incident, as evidenced by Halt's constantly evolving story and the new tales of close-up encounters told by the other men. The truth may go unknown for good, lost in a clearing deep in Rendlesham Forest.
