The Ghost of Alice Riley (guest submitted ghost story by Debbie)
I lived near Savannah, Georgia for about 4 years and I heard a very
interesting story several times while taking one of the local ghost tours (
which by the way is a must do if you go to Savannah). It seems that in the
very early days of Savannah there came a young girl from Ireland. Alice
Riley boarded a ship as a bond servant to escape the famine in her own
country. She was probably about 15 years old at the time and she knew
that once she arrived in Savannah she would be sold into servitude for
several years to pay for her passage. Alice never expected to be bought by
a man so cruel and heartless. He was a local plantation owner and even the
people of the town disliked him.
Alice had thought she would serve as a maid or field hand. Her new owner
had other ideas. Alice was a pretty girl and he decided to use her for his
pleasure. She had no right to refuse him, no more right that one of the
African slaves. He abused her badly raping and beating her almost daily.
Alice was befriended by the butler on the plantation and they fell in love.
One night when the abuse was too much to bear Alice's screams were
heard by her lover. He ran to her rescue and together they killed the man.
They were arrested and sentenced to hang in Wright Square. Alice,
however, was found to be carrying a baby. The good people of Savannah
would never dream of hanging a pregnant woman. They hanged her lover
immediately. Alice languished in the jail until her baby was born and about 2
hours after giving birth, she too was hanged.
Alice has been seen many, many times in Wright Square. She is as always
looking for her baby. She asks everyone to help her find her baby. Very
often tourists have called the Savannah police and reported a woman
looking for her child in Wright Square. The officers that have been around
a while know it is Alice. Rookies get sent out to look for her as a joke.
They never find anything of course. Even though when seen she is dressed in
old fashioned clothing from her day no one thinks anything of it because lots of
tour guides in Savannah dress in costume so she does not look out of place.
Reportedly Alice Riley has appeared to more people than any
other ghost in the country. Perhaps if you go to Wright Square in the early
evening hoursyou just might catch a glimpse of her. She may ask you to help
her find her baby.
The Third Eye Man
There is a Legend that surrounds The University of South Carolina. Some call it a
ghost story, while others think that it is something else. The "it" I am referring to is the
"Third Eye Man" . The first reported sighting was in 1949 on campus grounds. School
records at the university state that a strange man dressed in all silver was witnessed
by two students opening a man hole cover and crawling inside, pulling the cover back
over the opening and disappearing into the sewers. One of the students who
witnessed this strange occurrence was named Christopher Nichols and wrote for the
Gamecock. He wrote about what he had dubbed as the "sewer man" and word began
to spread around campus. After a few weeks, the initial hype of the sewer man had
faded.
About six months later, in 1950, A University Police officer was patrolling when he
stumbled across two mutilated chickens. It was reported that feathers and chicken
parts were scattered all over the loading dock of Longstreet theatre. The officer's first
instinct told him that this was some sort of twisted college prank. He walked back to
his vehicle to report the findings. After making a call into headquarters, he returned to
the scene and was shocked to discover a silver man keeled down over the mutilated
chickens. He immediately shined his flashlight onto the figure which in turn looked up
at him. What the officer saw horrified him. Staring back at him was what was described
as a grotesque, oddly colored face with what the officer said was a third eye on it's
forehead. It was stated that they "eye" was not a large eye, but an eye all the same.
The policeman ran from the scene and called for back up. It is told that the policeman
was in hysterics and when his back up arrived, there was no sign of the third eye
man. He had a hard time convincing his friends of what he had seen. People thought
that maybe this freaky encounter would be the last of the third eye man, but they were
wrong.
In the late 1960's, the underground tunnels or commonly referred to as "the
catacombs" beneath the University, became a popular place to frequent for students..
These tunnels connect most of the University. One night in early October, a fraternity
took a few pledges down to the catacombs.. They entered the tunnels and as they
rounded the first corner, they were met by a "crippled looking man dressed all in
silver" (according to police reports). The man charged at the students wielding a pipe,
and it didn't take long for the students to realize that this was not a joke. One of the
pledges was forced to the ground by the creature, and was reported to suffer "minor
cuts and minor shock." Two of the students went to the police and later that night the
first "third eye man-hunt" began. The police searched for hours, but the hunt was to
no avail. As a precaution, the police sealed off the entrances to the tunnels anyway.
It is said that University maintenance workers even today, will not venture into the
tunnels unless it is absolutely necessary and will not go alone. Is the third eye man a
ghost? Or is it something else possibly even more frightening? We may never know.
Waverly Hills Sanatorium
Waverly Hills Sanatorium has seen it's share of tragedy and death. It is reported as one of the most haunted
places on earth and has been the subject of many books, television shows and paranormal investigations.
In the early 20th century, Jefferson County in Kentucky had a major outbreak of tuberculosis. The swampland of
Louisville was a perfect environment for the tuberculosis bacteria to thrive, and there was a multitude of cases.
Waverly Hills was used to house a large number of tuberculosis patients during this time. As the people stricken
with the disease grew, more space was needed and a new hospital was built around 1924.
Many people left this earth from Waverly Hills Sanatorium. Death tolls have been rumored to be as high as
60,000 but in reality the number was probably much lower.
Many hauntings and much paranormal activity has been reported by visitors of the Waverly Hills Sanatorium.
Apparitions, Strange lights, cold spots and voices are commonly experienced. There have also been reports of
people being struck by an unseen force and encounters with a child ghost by the name of "Timmy". Many have
claimed to capture ghosts on film and to have recorded EVP's at the Waverly Hills Sanatorium. One of which is a
recording of what some believe to be the famous "Timmy". People have also reported seeing shadow people lurking
throughout the corridors.
Waverly Hills is and probably always will be one of the scariest places in existence. It is currently privately owned
and No trespassing signs are posted. Not that anyone in their right mind would go their alone. There are however,
rumors that Waverly hills sanatorium could possibly be converted into a hotel. If so, everyone may get their chance
to experience the horrors of Waverly Hills Sanatorium.
Luna Route 66 submitted by Mitzi
The Luna cafe, built in 1926, predates Route 66 and still boasts its original sign
and style. Said to be frequented by notorious characters throughout history, such
as Al Capone, and to have housed a brothel and casino during the heydays of the
Mother Road, you can only imagine what the old bar has seen over the years. If
only those walls could talk. But wait - maybe they do. According to several
regulars owner Larry (A.K.A. Rooster) is serving up more spirits than those from
the bottle.
Chip, who is a self described skeptic and one who doesn't believe it without seeing
it, tells us he walked up the stairs to the old sleeping rooms and storage area late
one night a few years ago. When his feet hit the landing he looked straight down
the hallway to the right, where the hall dead ends into a narrow eight foot long
room that no longer has a door. There, in the middle of the dark room at the end
of the hall was a woman wearing a milky white and thicker than a cloud robe.
Definitely a female, with ashy blonde hair, you can tell she is probably in her late
twenties, an elegant looking young woman. Completely shocked beyond fear he
hesitated only slightly before bolting into a room and shutting the door. A moment
later he threw open the door and swung his head out the door toward the narrow
dark room. She had left.
But the lady upstairs isn't a new story. Kathleen, who is frequently upstairs, will tell
anyone about the holographic figures that often wander the halls. You don't know
when you'll see her, but poke around enough and you will. Mostly at night, but
whenever she wants, she appears. Perfectly silent; except an occasional soft foot
step. Kathleen confirms she is a blonde, a young looking woman who will only
occasionally acknowledge her presence, with just the slightest of a nod. She
doesnt seem to want anything or have a grudge against the mortal residents.
There are bigger problems. The man is around too. An older curmudgeon wants to
let you know he's there. He likes to knock on walls, like he's knocking on a door,
but there is no door between the kitchen and first sleep room. It's clear he likes to
startle innocent visitors, and he leaves you with a feeling that you're the one who's
in the wrong place.
Kevin's become accustomed to the lady visitor, she hardly startles him now.
Besides, he says, when you get a close look at her she seems really calm and
always wears an effervescent white robe, she could even be an angel watching
out. Watching out for what? "The shadows." Yeah, the shadows. The ones that
cross your own when you're in the hall alone, the ones that fade instantly when you
enter a room, and those that break the light shining in under the door. They still
make his skin crawl.
The thing is it doesn't matter if you're alone, if it's day or night, or whether you are
looking or not. After closing time, and needing one more last round, Kathleen, Chip
and Kevin retreated to an upstairs room and sipped along as it got later. Kathleen
ventured tipsily into the hall to the bathroom. When she decided to return for the
vey last nightcap, upon opening the door, before taking one step, she was greeted
by him. He glared at her for only a second, just as long as it took her to slam the
door in his would- be face. She couldn't scream, and could hardly move but
managed to lock the door and catch her breath. Deciding that locking the door
might not be that effective; she barely cracked the bathroom door and peeked out
far enough to determine he had left. She flung open the door and returned to her
buds. When the guys saw the look on her face their words in unison rang out. "It's
there!" They sheepishly lined up next to the door with their shoulders pressing up
against one another, they all three took a glimpse into the hallway. Now each of
them will tell you it was the other who screamed, pissed their pants and called on
God, but they will all tell you he was there, at the end of the hall in the narrow
room. He turned as soon as he saw them and was instantly gone, not with a poof or
flash, just completely gone. A few more drinks were had and nerves were
strengthened for the next walk down the hall.
